Flying with your CPAP

Your CPAP machine is classified as a medical device by every major airline. This means it does not count as a carry-on or personal item. You can bring it in addition to your regular luggage at no extra charge. Always carry your CPAP on the plane with you — never check it in luggage where it can be lost, damaged, or exposed to extreme temperatures.

At airport security, you'll need to remove the machine from its bag for X-ray screening, just like a laptop. Some TSA agents may not be familiar with CPAP machines, so having your prescription or a doctor's letter handy can smooth the process, though it's rarely required.

What to pack

Beyond your machine and mask, here's what I recommend bringing on every trip:

• Distilled water packets — you won't always find distilled water at your destination, and hotel tap water will leave mineral deposits in your humidifier chamber
• Mask wipes — daily cleaning is even more important when you're in unfamiliar environments
• A spare set of disposable filters — hotel rooms can be dusty and filters clog faster in new environments
• A power adapter if traveling internationally — check your machine's voltage compatibility first

Hotel tips

Request a bedside table or nightstand on the side you sleep on. Set up your machine the same way you would at home — consistency helps your body maintain its therapy routine even in a new environment. If the hotel room is particularly dry (common in desert climates and during winter), consider increasing your humidity setting by one level.

Camping and off-grid travel
